Chapin Town Hall

Mayor's Message

Greetings,

I am proud to announce that we have received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. This certificate was awarded for the Town of Chapin's 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) an effort led by Director of Finance Laura Culler. This Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. This recognition is the culmination of years of hard work and effort by our team and I am thrilled to have achieved this standard of excellence.

Something that has been brought to my attention affecting our community has been a recent rash of vehicular incidents. A number of these incidents occur due to distracted driving. According to the CDC, each day in the United States approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.

A study conducted by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis found that drivers under the age of 20 have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. I don't want any of our community members to experience the pain of losing a loved one due to distracted driving. Community members can take a pledge at the dmv website and commit to focusing on driving. Educating our young drivers on the risks and dangers of driving while distracted and modeling positive behaviors are ways we can all have an impact on making our roadways safer.

Warmest Regards
Mayor David Knight

Chapin Mayor Receives Quilt of Valor

On Friday, February 15, the American Legion Post 193 hosted an event to honor veterans in our area.  Along with 10 other veterans, including a Pearl Harbor survivor, Mayor David Knight accepted a Quilt of Valor on behalf of his father who served in 1941.

During the ceremony local organizer Jodi Donnelly said the following as she read from a poem. “The ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife, goes off to serve his country and offers up his life.” Our community is indebted to all those who have heard that call and sacrificed for our nation.

Quilts of Valor is a non-profit group that creates full-sized handmade quilts for those who’ve served.
Organizers said that South Carolina gives out more Quilts of Valor than any other state. If you’re interested in volunteering or donating to their cause, you can find out more information here.
