Mayor's Message                                                May 8, 2017

Vision Statement for Chapin Town Hall:

To instill the highest level of Ethics, Integrity and Excellence in all aspects of Chapin Municipal Operations.

Mission Statement for the Town of Chapin:

To improve the quality of life for residents and businesses in Chapin, SC by being outstanding stewards of taxpayer‘s money while fostering economic development and job growth.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5

The Chapin Downtown Farmer’s Market was a big success! I enjoyed walking through and seeing all the vendors. The music by Curt London was great and the wellness demonstration by Shelly Daugherty was informative and useful. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this new event, and we look forward to it growing bigger and better as the season goes along. Mark your calendar for the first Saturday of every month through October.

Last week I attended the two day Mayor’s Bike & Walk Summit in Columbia. I enjoyed hearing presentations from some other mayors across the state about the positive impacts sidewalks, trails and bike lanes are adding to their communities’ quality of life. We also participated in sessions where funding opportunities to expand sidewalks, trails and bike lanes were discussed. We will continue to aggressively pursue these funding sources as well as monitor future grant opportunities to bring available funds to provide this infrastructure to our town.

Next Tuesday at our Town Council meeting we will get an update from the Chapin Arbor Day group about their plans for the greenspace by the railroad on Chapin Road. Jake Powers with Troop 870 will also share with council about his Eagle Scout project, which installed the remaining two welcome signs for the town on Chapin Road. Jake along with members of his scout troop and the Justin Pepper Service Club installed the new signs that were donated by the Justin Pepper Foundation during last month’s Community Service Day.  Everyone should celebrate and thank the many volunteers who do so much for community.  We all appreciate what you do!

The SC Department of Transportation will be holding a public information meeting on Tuesday, May 23 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Chapin High School to provide information and solicit public comments on the proposed widening of Interstate 26 from west of SC-202 (Exit 85) to west of US-176 (Exit 101). This will be a follow-up to presentations made last fall about improving traffic flow through the addition of new travel lanes in both directions, improvement of the interchanges and exit ramps, and replacement of the overpass bridges. There will be a drop-in format with displays and no formal presentation will be made at the meeting. I hope you will come out to learn more about this project and provide comments to the engineers and designers.

Together We Stand – Chapin Proud!

Midlands Gives logo

Congratulations to Chapin charities!

Last week as part of the fourth annual Midlands Gives online fundraising campaign, $1.6 million dollars was donated to help Midlands area charities, schools, churches and organizations. Five Chapin area groups participated in the 24-hour online giving campaign for a total of almost $30,000 collectively - Chapin's We Care Center, The Justin Pepper Foundation, Chapin Theatre Company, Dutch Fork Choral Society and GOoDWorks. Thanks to everyone who supported these fine organizations!
