Memorial Day Service

Memorial Day Service

American Legion Post 193 and the Town of Chapin hosted their annual memorial day ceremony last Monday at Town Hall.

People of all ages and backgrounds came together, including US Rep. Joe Wilson, State Sen. Ronnie Cromer, SC House Rep. Nathan Ballentine, and many more to honor the fallen heroes who've laid down their lives to protect the nation. The service included a speech from Mayor Al Koon, a rendition of TAPS, and the Chapin NJROTC raising then dipping the flags to half mast in honor of our fallen heroes.

The keynote address was given by Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Whitten. Lieutenant Colonel Whitten currently serves as the professor of Military Science at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Prior to her current assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Whitten was stationed in a number of places worldwide. Lieutenant Colonel Whitten is the sister of Captain Daniel Whitten who was killed in action in Afghanistan on his third deployment in four years.

The Town of Chapin would like to extend a special thanks to Gold Star families, local Scouts, members of Chapin American Legion Post 193 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 193, Chapin High School students, local business who donated time and supplies, our Veterans, and to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to America.

Principal Michael Ames celebrated in his speech the graduating class garnering 39 HOPE scholarships, 226 LIFE scholarships, and 32 Palmetto Fellows scholarships. The graduating class boasts a total of $56,513,000 in scholarships.

"You have brought so much joy to me, to this school, and to this community," Ames said. "I got to witness the passion and love you have for each other and for our school."

After the names were called and the seniors were congratulated, the class of 2023 tossed their caps and formally became Chapin High School graduates.

Town Hall 5.16.23

Mayor Al Koon signed a proclamation during May's Town Council meeting declaring May 20-May 26 to be Safe Boating Week in Chapin, coinciding with National Safe Boating Week.

The proclamation states that, on average, 650 die annually in boating-related accidents in the United States. Mayor Koon expressed his support of the efforts of the Safe Boating campaign led by the U.S. Coast Guard and proclaimed May 20-26 National Safe Boating Week and the start of a year-round effort to promote safe boating.

Mayor Koon ended the proclamation by saying "I urge all those who boat to practice safe boating habits and wear a life jacket at all times while boating."
