The Town of Chapin is getting ready for its biggest party of the year and is looking forward to hosting Midlands residents and visitors from across the state for its 38th annual Labor Day Festival and Parade. The festival will feature many of the activities and events that families and individuals have come to enjoy, including live music, classic car show, arts and crafts, street vendors, food and of course, the parade. Last year’s theme, Chapin – The Heart of Lake Murray, was so popular that organizers are using it again.
Presented by Lexington Medical Center,the weekend kicks off with the Chapin Downtown Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning, September 2 from 8:30 - 11:00 am. Then on Sunday evening,Blues on Beaufort Street is back with a free musical concert featuring the popular Anthony Charles and the Blues Dolphins. The Columbia band will perform their classic Chicago brand of blues on the outdoor stage, sponsored by Chapin Liquor, beginning at 8 pm. There will be food and refreshments available from Doza Rizen, Tipsy Toad Tavern and Tap It! Bottle and Brews.
On Monday, thefestival features a variety of activities for all ages. Longtime Chapinpharmacist Dr. Ronald Crawford, more fondly known as Doc Crawford toChapinites, will be the Grand Marshall for this year’s parade. He will bejoined by more than 100 entries made up of local businesses, school andcommunity groups, churches, beauty queens and politicians as well as theaward-winning Chapin High School Marching Band. The route goes straight downChapin Road (SC Hwy 76) from the GIS parking lot (917 Chapin Road) to the Bi-LoShopping Center (1419 Chapin Road).
Immediatelyfollowing the parade, there will be live entertainment on the Mid-Carolina ElectricCooperative Stage featuring Chapin’s own The Shelby Raye Band,beginning at 11 am. There will be a Children’s Play Area, featuringkid-friendly games, activities and bouncy house on Clark Street, thanks toO’Leary Orthodontics. Morgan and Associates Nationwide Insurance and Zestos ofChapin are sponsoring the ninth annual Classic Car Show in the Mt. Horebparking lot off Beaufort Street, and street vendors selling a variety of artsand crafts, clothing items, food and knick knacks will be lined up on LexingtonAvenue, Beaufort and Clark Streets. The Associated Model Railroads of Columbiawill have model train layouts on display in the American Legion Post 193(located on Lexington Avenue in the old fire station) as well as information onthe South Carolina Railroad Museum and Operation Lifesaver. In addition, theChapin Branch Library will be holding its annual book sale in the CommunityRoom at Chapin Town Hall (157 NW Columbia Avenue) until 2:30 pm, with proceedsbenefiting children and youth reading programs.

There are Chapin– The Heart of Lake Murray Tshirts available for sale at Town Hall prior to the festival, and they will be available for sale at the Town’s tent on Clark Street at the remaining Chapin Downtown Farmer’s Markets held on the first Saturday of the month. The attractive red cotton Tshirts are $15 each and available in sizes Youth Medium to 2XL.
